Garbage is a big problem in the city of Maputo. There is no infrastructure created for people to dispose of waste on the streets.
Streets smell bad and are not hygienic. This is specially problematic as people live their life on the streets.
Children play, food is sold on the ground. People cook and eat outside.
In this workshop our concern was how to address these issues.

And the first question was: would people be more careful with their garbage if garbage bins existed?
Students went through the area talking to people and hearing their complaints.
Our first idea was to hang plastic bags with messages around the city. We tried this out and the response was very positive.
Vendors thanked us and people at the park were really happy with it. But of course, overnight there was no plastic bag left.
So this idea worked as experiment, but we had to think of a new solution.

First idea tested: Plastic bags with messages

What to do?
We had a practically non existent budget. We had discussions and sketched ideas, but they all seemed quite hard to implement.
A pile of old computers were packed in a box outside the classroom. They were a problem for the school, that was trying
to find ways of disposing of them.
The students came up with the idea of transforming them in to garbage bins. They managed to arrange old bits
of wire around the streets and with these materials started to create their garbage bins.

In this second tryout we thought it was important to address people not only in portuguese but also in Changana,
the local dialect of Maputo. To give visibility to Maputo's personality, but also it was better communication.

This idea worked much better! We experienced some very good results with people even putting their domestic garbage
in plastic bags next to our garbage points to be collected by the municipality! (in down town Maputo garbage is not
collected at home, but has to be brought to big containers, the only garbage point and very often too full).
We were afraid of maintenance, but people started putting plastic bags in them.

In some areas it didn't work so well and bins were still empty after a few days. It worked best in passing points
and where we had talked to the people living that part of the street (vendors, photographers, cooks, car washers).

One of the problems we had was that wire is too precious. So in a next stage these garbage bins should be hanged
with plastic bands. But they were too expensive for our budget then.

Images shown reflect the work process and some of the final garbage bins created.
