About this workshop
· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·
This workshops addressed issues of communication, context and identity. It conciliated formal aspects
related to designing letters and readability, such as material, proportion and contrast (background), with
aspects related to the creation of meaning such as the context chosen, the identity of given community.

It was directed at members of Theatre of the Oppressed Maputo (GTO-Maputo). People whose professional activities
to promote development through participatory theatre techniques in communities all around Mozambique and for whom
communication is at the core of their work. Mozambique presents a challenge in communication across
the country with many different languages being spoken along it's territory. Portuguese, the official language
is only spoken by 40% of the population and read by far less.

Also Theatre of the Oppressed works with issues important for a given community. How to identify these issues?
What the best way do address them? Knowing how to gain people's trust is difficult, and to create change
and empower even more. How to present ideas?
This workshop is part of a series of workshops in communication developed during May 2009 addressing these issues.

We developed tools to create letters, from a given environment. Working from the possibilities offered
from looking around us. The purpose was of empowering GTO actors with tools to create letters on stage
while presenting plays in so many different settings around Mozzambique, where languages keep changing, making
it very hard to travel around with "fixed" communication material.
This workshop also addressed issues of context, meaning and identity. The medium can change the message,
how can we play with this?
Participants were asked to create words related to their work in GTO-Maputo and to transform their meaning
playing with materials and contexts.
Words developed were GTO (Group of Theatre of the Oppressed), Cholera (Cólera), Aids  and HIV
(Sida in Portuguese)
, Comunidade Activa (Active Community) and Transforma (Transform).
The local we worked in was Feira de Hulene (Hulene Market) a square where GTO's new headquarters will be.

Creating words allows for a critical approach of the meaning of words, to their relationship to images and how they
can translate in to images or symbols. Questions of communication and identity.

Thank you GTO-Maputo for the support!

This workshop was part of a project developed with Pedro Manuel in Participatory Design and Theatre.
My workshops in design were continued by his and vice versa. We are still developing a website with the full
project but meanwhile you can visit  I. Politician and Identity and Place to see other workshops in participatory design.
