About this workshop
· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·
This workshop in communication was directed at members of Theatre of the Oppressed Maputo (GTO-Maputo).
People whose professional activity is to promote development through participatory theatre techniques in communities
all around Mozambique and for whom communication is at the core of their work.

Theatre of the Oppressed works with issues important for a given community. How to identify these issues?
What the best way do address them? Knowing how to gain people's trust is difficult, and to create change
and empower even more. How to present ideas?
This workshop is part of a series of workshops in communication developed during May 2009 addressing these issues.

GTO-Maputo had just received the key to their new headquartes in a neighborhood in the Outskirts of Maputo called Hulene.
Their new space is located at Feira de Hulene, a square with bars, cafés, a printing house, outdoor taylors,
a language school and small commercial activities. It also functions as a parking space. It has a big stage covered
in advertising for one of Mozambique's cell companies. It is messy, very poor and a main crossing point
for the people who live in the area.

In this workshop the challenge was to communicate with the community. To dialog, exchange ideas, contributing
to the construction of an identity as a common practice. The challenge was o create a process of interacting
with people, getting to know the community they would be working with. The process had to be a visual one.

The groups developed work in different directions: two groups were challenged to think of processes regarding
the area: Feira de Hulene. Who lives this space? (> Collective Prints > Thinking the Future)
Another group was challenged to work the new building of GTO-Maputo, how to invite people in? How to make
people feel that GTO works close to the community? (> Language and Diversity)
And one group had the challenge to think about how to communicate GTO-Maputo in a way that would expand besides
Feira de Hulene bringing more people to GTO. (> Carriers).

Thank you GTO-Maputo for the support!
