This workshop was held at ESAD.CR in 2005 with André Heers. 20 students participated. After a brief introduction to type history and to the relation between technique and form in constructing letters
through history (based on Gerrit Noordzij's ideas) students were given the task to build letters in a way,
that when constructed they would deconstruct themselves.
Images shown (click to enlarge) are of :
– letters on a billboard, constructed from posters hanging on the billboard. A few weeks later type had disappeared,
more posters were fixed, events ended and posters were replaced;
– letters built with pines. Pines continue to fall from trees, people and animals go buy, changing shapes letting
letters disappear;
– letters built with fire starters. They burned away. (actually this didn't work, because letters were marked on the floor)
A rather dramatic effect with the step exploding and ciment flying..;
– letters built with dog food. Many dogs run around the school. In just a few hours all the food was gone;
– letters designed with water. It was very sunny and letters dried out;
– soap letters. Just wash your hands and they go away;
– letters constructed with all objects existing in students back packs. By the end of the day, all objects were tidied to go home;
– type on a mirror; light reflects, forms change.
