This workshop in communication was developed in Maputo with the support of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian
and directed at members of Theatre of the Oppressed Maputo (GTO-Maputo). People whose professional activity
is to promote development through participatory theatre techniques in communities all around Mozambique
and for whom communication is at the core of their work. Mozambique presents a challenge in communication across
the country with many different languages being spoken along it's territory. Portuguese, the official language
is only spoken by 40% of the population and read by far less.
Also Theatre of the Oppressed works with issues important for a given community. How to identify these issues?
What the best way do address them? Knowing how to gain people's trust is difficult, and to create change
and empower even more. How to present ideas?
This workshop is part of a series of workshops in communication developed during May 2009 addressing these issues.
I divided the group in teams and challenged them to create a political party. They should defend something they
believed in. It could be reasonable, or totally unreasonable, they could use fantasy and be ironic.By the end of the workshop they had to have a logo for their party, and be able to communicate their
ideas through images and a prepared speech.
They had to think how the candidate presented himself, and make a campaign photo.
The material they could use: tape.
This workshop was a really dynamic, funny and surprising experience. I was amazed with how easily the groups
created their stories, could make them grow and play with them, twisting and changing parts. The creative part
was smooth, but thinking communication, and how to tell a story presented a big challenge. They had difficulties
organizing information and thinking a presentation for the "others" to understand. Critical thinking and
visual thinking were also important points of this workshop. The work process was very rich with a lot learn't.
The end result was loud, intense and well achieved. With each party argumenting in its behalf. In a playful
manner serious issues were discussed. Irony was used in a way that surpised me. Conflicts, feelings of unjustice
were addressed in a positive frame.
In the end of the workshop we talked about other possibilities of "designing" thinking communication.
Planning and using some of the strategies learn't in this workshop could create opportunities to address some
communities in the work of GTO-Maputo with a new approach.
And the importance of thinking how others perceive what we are saying in communicating sucessfuly.

This workshop was part of a project developed with Pedro Manuel in Participatory Design and Theatre.
